Abbotsbury is a 4300 acre sheep farm situated on the N9 main road from Johannesburg and Durban to the Garden Route ,Plettenberg Bay, Knysna and Cape Town. The beautiful valleys with their towering rock formations, where the Black Eagles, caracal and klipspringer live, are also home to the majestic kudu, mountain reedbuck and the rare grey rhebuck. Just 3 kms off the N9 , up a good gravel road through the grazing springbuck and steenbuck, is the carefully restored homestead (circa 1827), set in beautiful gardens with rolling green, manicured lawns. Sue and Gordon are there to meet you and show you into your accommodation, where you can relax in privacy after a day travelling or sightseeing. Enjoy warm hospitality, the fresh karoo air and amazing night skies. The cottage with its private lapa and beautiful views, has two bedrooms with two bathrooms and a private lounge/dinningroom. The suite, shaded by an enormous Pepper tree, has a private lounge/diningroom , full bathroom ensuite off a large bedroom with twin beds, from where you may watch kudu grazing on the hillside! All the bedrooms have crisp white cotton linen , white fluffy towels, ceiling fans and wall heaters to ensure your comfort in any weather. There is ample hot water to fill the large ball-and-claw bathtubs where one can truly relax, or enjoy a refreshing shower. The rooms are furnished with restored antique Cape cottage furniture, gleaming brass light switches, mohair carpets and original paintings. Your meals, Abbotsburys large breakfast ,or a dinner of local specialities of lamb , venison or vegetarian, with fresh vegetables and lettuce picked from her kitchen garden, and personally prepared by Sue , are served in your private dinningrooms on bone china with silver cutlery and fine glassware. You can walk freely in this safe haven, with hiking paths up the valleys onto the mountains, or down to the hide where you can sit and watch some of the over 100 bird species identified by Gordon and Sue, especially the Black Eagles on their nest. Close by is the Historic town of Graaff-Reinet with its Valley of Desolation, numerous well-known museums and art galleries , Nieu-Bethesda and the famous Owl House, and the Cradock Mountain Zebra Park with the rare Mountain Zebra.
